Civil Defence, UNDP organize Mock Drill to train Anganwari workers in disaster preparedness

As part of the strategy to empower community on disaster preparedness, a mock drill-cum-training programme for Anganwari workers of Social Welfare Department was held here today. As many as 50 Anganwari workers were trained in first-aid, search and rescue operations and firefighting skills during the programme.
Through the drill, jointly organized by Civil Defence and UNDP, the participants were trained in specialized skills to combat emergency situations during natural as well as manmade disasters.
The programme was attended by Coordinator, Disaster Management and O.S.D. with Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Aamir Ali, Deputy Controller, Civil Defence, Raja Nighat Aman, Chief Warden, Civil Defence, Dr. Majid, besides social workers and a large number of people.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ali emphasized that disaster preparedness minimizes adverse affects by taking effective precautionary actions. He said planning process will only be effective if those who are the ultimate beneficiaries, know what to do in times of disasters. He said an Effective Disaster Preparedness Plan will protect development, introduce disaster mitigation and strengthen local infrastructures, adding community as an institution is most powerful among the entire mechanism of disaster administration.
Other speakers encouraged Anganwari workers to voluntarily participate in disaster preparedness programmes.
